That black one that holds the downpipe to the exhaust manny with a stud, and by extension the cylinder head. It is the final nut preventing me from removing the head. And that view is how much space I have to work with. I’ve tried 5 minutes of a MAP torch and penetrative spray, and no luck. Any ideas?

I thought you were talking about me for a minute there...

Spray more and let it soak for longer. Rinse and repeat with the torch until something gives. What spray and tool are you using? I haven’t had to use a torch (yet).

Ugh that doesn’t look fun. Soak longer is all I got maybe some candle wax on the threads although it looks like you don’t have much room there.

Could try giving the stud shot with freeze spay?

Electric Impact Wrench with extensions, the only thing that worked on mine recently. It took the whole stud with it. Then I just added some lock tite and used it like a bolt to get back together.

If all else fails, use a nut cracker. (Insert “your mom” joke here.)

You’ll have to replace the nut of course.....but you were probably going to have to anyway.

I’m gonna torch it with what’s left in my MAP torch

Well now I know

I approve of this

I took the whole stud out with the first one without an electric impact gun. This one just won’t budge even with the gun.
![]() 02/02/2018 at 13:32 |

Tried it, but I’ve got a whole can to waste on this nut.
![]() 02/02/2018 at 13:33 |

True. Do you have an impact tool that will get in there?
![]() 02/02/2018 at 13:36 |

I have a cheap version of this I’ve used when the electric fails.

Holy crap! 2200lbs?? I don’t think I even need that much. I think the problem is either the nut is stuck or rounded, but it doesn’t look too rounded. I enjoy overkill, but this might be too much.

Haha, by all means blast away!

I’m borrowing an electric impact gun from MontegoMan, I didn’t need it on the first one, but this second one didn’t budge with it.

How’s it work? And will it fit?? I’m replacing every nut and bolt I remove.
![]() 02/02/2018 at 13:41 |

Well you can still limit it, what it does is make every rotation of the nut, 10-20 rotations of the wrench. so it’s like a 10-20x multipler of the force you put in. They work really well, but you have to have a spot to rest the extra arm as that becomes a leverage point for it.
![]() 02/02/2018 at 13:41 |

I could fit a hot candle in there but I don’t conceptually understand how the hot wax works.
![]() 02/02/2018 at 13:45 |

Are you replacing the downpipe?

six point, quarter inch drive socket, with wobble joints, and u-joint adapter extension, with enough length of extensions to reach it from a comfortable spot.....
they are nice for when you need to turn bolts from around corners.......

Oh....ouch. Yeah, you’re hosed.
![]() 02/02/2018 at 13:56 |

It worked for me once on a header stud. Theoretically the melted wax runs down the threads lubricating it for easy removal. It also might have been the pb blaster I’d sprayed on it for a day and half.
![]() 02/02/2018 at 13:59 |

I’m gonna let it burn
![]() 02/02/2018 at 14:00 |

Nope! That piece is expensive as hell and hard to find. They made so few cars as it is.
![]() 02/02/2018 at 14:01 |

I can already reach it with extensions alone.
![]() 02/02/2018 at 14:03 |

There’s one more option.
Nothing can beat the wave motion gun.
![]() 02/02/2018 at 14:05 |

I can definitely give it a try. No expense will be spared on this nut/stud combo
![]() 02/02/2018 at 14:08 |

then you should have it whooped. just be sure to use a six point socket that is “real snug” when you put it over the nut(you might have to drive it on with a hammer), and get a long ratchet, or a ratchet with a cheater bar, to get some extra torques on it, and “get mean” with it. sometimes you really got to put out to get them loose......
![]() 02/02/2018 at 14:10 |

That’s what I called it when I had a waterbed....
![]() 02/02/2018 at 14:13 |

OK.
Here’s what I would do.
First, I’d paint a small line on the nut with white-out or a marking pen that you can see (to see if the stud spins and you have to take a different approach). Then I’d get a 1/2" drive socket, universal joint, and extensions as needed to a breaker bar. Try to keep the u joint angle big. Then give it a big turn.

Cut the down pipe and add a stainless v-band clamp inline. Pull out the pipe with the head
![]() 02/02/2018 at 14:47 |
|
oscillating cutter with a carbide blade. Come in vertically on the nut and slice it radially. Then hit the cut with a chisel and the nut will split open. 5 minutes tops.
![]() 02/02/2018 at 14:49 |
|
The loop goes around the nut and the flat/pointed bit inside the loop goes against the side of the nut. As you tighten it up, the pointed bit pushes into the side of the nut and splits it open. You might have to go at it from two or three sides of the nut, but it will eventually work. (It was slow going on the one I had to split.) There are better brands to buy than that Kobalt one, but I needed one ASAP one weekend and it worked out. I won’t lie - if space is an issue (which it obviously is) it may be tough to get to it with the splitter, but it’s worth a shot.

![]() 02/02/2018 at 14:59 |

Just curious DT, why are you recommending a 1/4 drive? I’d go with 1/2 drive here to bust ‘er loose.

The waterbed.
![]() 02/02/2018 at 15:10 |

well, when he started the post, somehow i recall him saying(thought that he said somewhere) that he could barely get onto it.
i love my 3/8 drive stuff, and like you say 1/2 is THE go to with anything of size.
SO i was of the impression that there wasnt room, and thats where i use 1/4 sockets, and extensions in desperation. i usually kick down with adapters larger ratchets
now that i think of it, he later said that he had enough extension to reach it, which, with all that length, is killing the effectiveness of his impact.

For the wave motion? And you know what the gun is in bed....
![]() 02/02/2018 at 15:38 |
|
I don’t think you want the candle to be lit. You just heat up the nut/bolt then touch the wax to it and it should suck it into the threads like when you solder copper pipe fittings.

I was thinking about it too hard
![]() 02/02/2018 at 16:25 |

Gotcha. I kinda figured his impact gun was 1/2 drive anyway.
![]() 02/02/2018 at 19:29 |

A well-fitting socket and a large breaker bar or
significant
impact gun. Expect the stud to break, which shouldn’t be an issue if you’re pulling manifold out (can replace it on the bench).
